HÂþ» instructor recognized with National Inclusive Education Award

Nancy Hallihan-Sturgeon, an Early Childhood Education Instructor at New Brunswick Community College (HÂþ») Miramichi Campus, has been recognized with a National Inclusive Education Award from the New Brunswick Association for Community Living (NBACL).

“Nancy’s passion for inclusive education and community service is evident in all that she does,” said Suzanne Desrosiers, Vice-President of Employee and Student Development. “Not only does Nancy foster respect for inclusion and diversity in her classrooms but she is nurturing that respect in her students who will take it with into their early childhood education careers.”

Beyond the classroom, Nancy enthusiastically promotes and engages the students in various volunteer activities to promote diversity and inclusion. This has included promoting Orange Shirt Day which recognizes the experiences of residential school survivors; collaborating with local community resource agencies for an Intergenerational Family Fun Day which attracted over 200 participants; and partnering to facilitate programs in inclusive education.

Desrosiers says employees such as Nancy are essential for HÂþ» to achieve its vision of transforming lives and communities.

“We recognize that we are stronger together as a College and as a province,” said Desrosiers. “Nurturing a culture of belonging which respects diversity and inclusion is part of this. We congratulate Nancy on this well-deserved recognition and we thank her for her ongoing leadership and work at HÂþ».”

The National Inclusive Education Awards were introduced by the Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL and recognize New Brunswick individuals, schools and organizations that work every day to include all students in education and school life. The awards presentation at Government House is the focal point for celebrations marking National Inclusive Education Month in New Brunswick.
